Just in time for capitalism’s Christmas hangover, Netflix is dropping a second season Squid game. The prime-time show earned an Emmy nod with a win for best actor Lee Jung-jae (The Acolyte) and its director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Hwang, who also developed the program, took time to develop the whole idea Squid game as the first season was inspired by the Korean financial crisis, and the ongoing economic turmoil after the global pandemic served as the basis for the second and third seasons.
In an interview with Deadline, Hwang discussed how the global events that have taken place since the series became a hit reflected in his first thought-provoking interview. “Do we have the strength and energy to try to make the world a better place? Does humanity have what it takes to change the course of the world, and can we really give up our greed, our desires to build a better world together? Those were some of the questions I wanted to ask, not about who or how these people who play games like what they are like,” he said. He is more interested in how the faceless enemies of late-class capitalism have continued to raid the lower classes because of the plague, than in finding out who they are. see they are exactly like that.

“The thing I was thinking about the most is this current world and how it divides us, it divides us from the other group, it creates different sides to be hostile,” he said. “There are many things that divide us today, whether it’s race, religion, language, the haves and the have-nots, the generation gap … things like this lead to such a divide where it’s almost as if there is a line that cannot be crossed at all. It seems like world leaders are creating these walls and divisions and it makes us think that everyone on the other side, who doesn’t think like you, is an unforgivable enemy.”
Hwang explained how the recent political events that were destroyed by the consequences of the epidemic entered the Squid Game image – and that the new level of judgment in the form of votes among the participants in season two mirrors canceling the tradition. “Even more than the tension that comes from these games themselves, I felt doubts and a lot of tension in these votes, because you wonder what will happen if the games continue, who will be voted for? ” Hwang explained. “That leads people in the games to think anything [is chosen]I’m right, you’re wrong.
