Citizens may be at risk if Yoon Suk Yeol stays: PPP chief
A top official in South Korea’s ruling party has called on President Yoon Suk Yeol to “stop his job soon”, saying citizens could be in “grave danger” if he continues in power.
Han Doong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party (PPP), added that his party had found “concrete evidence” that Yoon had ordered the arrest of key politicians on “crimes against the state”.
His comments, he made at an emergency party meeting on Friday, it seems that he is moving away from his previous position that his party will block the proposal of the hearing of the opposition parties, which must be voted on on Saturday.
The opposition parties need at least eight MPs from the ruling party to support the motion to withdraw in order to succeed.
Han expressed concern that “extreme actions” – such as the declaration of martial law on Tuesday – could be repeated if Yoon remains in office.
“[These will] putting the Republic of Korea and its people at great risk,” he said.
He also added that his party has learned about plans to detain politicians detained at a facility in Gwacheon, a city south of Seoul.
Meanwhile, ruling party MP Cho Kyung-tae became the first ruling party MP to publicly voice his support for Yoon’s impeachment.
“The decision is between standing on the side of the people by suspending the president’s work or becoming an alliance with the forces imposing martial law is a matter that should be judged by politicians,” said Cho.
“I hope that all politicians of People’s Power will stand on the side of the people,” he said.
