Ennis looked like the picture of a mentally disturbed man after his recent fight with Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9. He had a blank thousand yard vision and could see that he was going to suffer from that performance every day.
That’s why it’s dangerous for Ennis to jump into Vergil Jr.’s fight. without the work of rebuilding two or three boosters.
Boot’s must decide
Ennis has not decided whether he will take the fight, which indicates that he and his promoter, Hearn, are worried about what might happen if he moves up to 154 to fight Vergil. Ennis looked really bad in her last fight against Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9th and she didn’t do well in her match before that against David Avanesyan.
Ubuthi is faced with a big decision: Should he vacate his IBF welterweight title and move up to 154 or stay where he is, protecting the smaller fighters?
No matter what he decides, it will show his confidence. At this point, it looks like he has lost confidence and will likely stay at 147 to continue defending his belt.
A move up to 154 would mean Ennis would be entering unknown territory, which would be disastrous for him. Vergil Jr. he can hit, and Boots aren’t exactly hard to hit.
Few people believe that Ennis will win against Vergil because he doesn’t look like a top fighter right now. You can tell that Hearn has lost faith in Ennis after watching his last two fights against Chukhadzhian and Avanesyan.
Hearn says Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) will decide if he wants to face Ortiz Jr. (22-0, 21 KOs) undefeated. He prefers the fight to be at 147 for the IBF welterweight belt, but that’s not possible because Vergil, 26, is too big for that weight.
Vergil has been fighting at 154 in his last three fights since 2022, and it will take a lot for him to get back to this level.
