Schofield Vs Stevenson Update: De La Hoya Awaits Final Deal From Shakur’s Team
Floyd Schofield has responded today to reports that his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has not yet signed a fight between him and WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson on February 22nd.
Contract Review
Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) posted that De La Hoya is “waiting for Shakur’s team to send the final agreement.” He insists that his team “knows that we will stop Shakur.”
De La Hoya announced his fighter, Schofield, 22, who will face Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) on the main card of the upcoming Riyadh Season in February. If Oscar has his doubts about inexperienced novice Schofield battling three-time world champion Shakur, it’s understandable.
Schofield looked like a 100% pure rookie in his last fight against him Rene Tellez Giron on November 2. He fell and took several heavy shots, punishing the gun that Michel Rivera used to carry. De La Hoya will look out of place if he lets Schofield take that fight. The setback would be difficult for Oscar, and his fighting career, Schofield would be ruined.
Schofield’s stock will plummet from the one-sided loss to Stevenson, and he may not bounce back. He will be one of the many players Shakur has lost and will never be talked about again by the fans without criticism.
A better choice for Schofield
With Kid Austin ranked #2 in the WBA, he could challenge champion Gervonta Davis for his belt, which could be a big pay day. That would be a better fight against Schofield than against a singer who defends Shakur, and he’s taken out of a potentially unpleasant fight.
Thinking the Shakur-Schofield fight doesn’t do it happens, Shakur needs to give Edwin De Los Santos repeat to show the fans that his poor performance against him in 2023 was really due hand injury.
As things stand, fans do not believe that Shakur was injured in the De Los Santos fight. They felt the energy coming from him, and he started to run until the end of the fight, to the loud cheers of the fans in the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Nevada crowd doesn’t like watching runners. That style might work in Newark, New Jersey, but not anywhere else. He’s entertaining, and Shakur’s out-of-date, timeless style was poison to T-Mobile fans.
Shakur said this week that he wants to sign De Los Santos to raise him. Fans saw this as a sneaky way for Shakur to have an excuse to cheat. If Stevenson signs De Los Santos, he’ll have a permanent excuse to tell the fans why he’s not fighting him.
