Vargas To Keyshawn Davis: “Nobody Knows Who You Are!”
Fernando Vargas says, “Nobody knows who Keyshawn Davis is,” and he needs to get his name out there where the fans know him before he’ll consider letting him fight one of his three sons.
Two-time junior middleweight champion Vargas says lightweight contender Keyshawn (12-0, 8 KOs) wouldn’t be seen if he went to a restaurant or gym. Fernando says fans will know who his 24-year-old son, Amado Vargas, is, but NOT Keyshawn.
Nobody Knows Keyshawn
Top Rank will need to do something serious with Keyshawn to make him a star because the way he has worked and the lack of connection to the game does not leave him in a better position than he was when he first became champion in 2021.
Keyshawn looks like to take a batha fighter who failed to live up to the expectations of his promoters after winning a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics.
They should throw Keyshaw in with one of the sharks like Andy Cruz, and if he loses, drop him like a bad habit. I know it will hurt Top Rank to admit that they messed up signing him rather than the guy who beat him in the Olympics, Andy Cruz, but nobody is flawless.
“The story is this. Nobody knows who Keyshawn Davis is. So, you need lift up his name,” said Fernando Vargas to Fighthype when asked about Keyshawn Davis fighting Amado Vargas.
What Fernando can say is HOW Top Rank can get Keyshawn’s “name”. I know the answer, but I don’t think they want to risk Keyshawn and watch him lose over and over again. They stuck to Edgar Berlanga-style gameplay, feeding him cans of tomatoes, hoping that the players would be impressed enough to become fans.
Fernando is right. No one outside of the die-hard boxing fans knows who Keyshawn is, and they’re excited when he fights. There is never any noise from the fans when Keyshawn fights because his fighting style is not fun.
Keyshawn’s last four opponents:
– Gustavo Lemos
– Miguel Madueno
– Jose Pedraza: 35
– Nahir Albright
“He and Keyshawn went into the restaurant. Who will they know? Will they know Amado or Keyshawn? That’s all I have to say. I’m not saying we won’t fight him because we want to.
It Should Be Millions
“We are low, but they should do M [millions]. Not hundreds of thousands of dollars. M,” Fernando said about the Davis brothers needing to bring in millions per fight to be interested in letting Keyshawn or one of them fight his sons.”
It doesn’t look promising as Keyshawn becomes a fighter who brings in millions with his fights. He’s not another Gervonta Davis, and he doesn’t have the entertaining style of guys like William Zepeda or Abdullah Mason. If anything, Keyshawn fights more like Shakur Stevenson, but mixes in some roughhouse tactics. Think of Keyshawn as a physical version of Shakur.
The problem for 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn is that he’s fought weak opposition throughout his three-year professional career, and he hasn’t had to fight talented guys like Andy Cruz, William Zepeda, or Raymond Muratalla.
All the soft-pedaling that Top Rank has done for Shakur to take the back road to stardom is not working. The fans were not impressed because they are not stupid. They saw with their own eyes that Top Rank feeds Keyshawn stiffs.
If Top Rank changes things up by matching Keyshawn against Cruz, Zepeda, Muratalla, or Abdullah Mason, he could earn a following if he wins. They don’t do that.
Even now, Keyshawn is credited with defeating WBO champion Denys Berinchyk, the weakest of all lightweight title holders.
Hype It Up
“You have to talk about it, and it has to be widely known. I’m not saying anything wrong. No one knows who those guys are unless you are a boxing head. “No one knows who they are yet,” said Fernando about Keyshawn’s brothers. “If Amado walks into a place with Keyshawn, I don’t even know who he is.”
Keyshawn has two brothers who play boxing, Kelvin Davis and Keon Davis, but they don’t show much talent. Davis calls himself and his brothers “DB3” and repeats that moniker a lot, hoping it will stick in the minds of fans. It didn’t happen.
Welterweight prospect Kelvin is underrated, and Keon looks just below average. If Keyshawn is hoping that Fernando will instigate wars involving his sons and the Davis brothers, he is deluding himself because that will not happen. No one would care if Fernando did those fights, and he obviously knows that.
“When Amado and he enter the arena, most people know Amado. They won’t know who the hell Keyshawn is,” said Vargas.
