Going to the theater is already a chore; after choosing a movie, you have to drag your butt there, decide which new popcorn tub to buy, and choose the right seats. That has been common in the evaluation of They are not badapparently—which is hardly surprising for a film based on a beloved, long-running Broadway musical full of catchy songs. While They are not bad will no doubt lend itself to specially designated “sing-along” shows in the future, there’s also the real fact that not every audience member shelling out $15 or more for a ticket wants to hear the person behind them clash with Cynthia Erivo. and Ariana Grande.
