Mercedes-Benz Develops Parking Assistant for Faster, Safer Parking

Mercedes-Benz has evolved Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC systemmaking automatic parking quick, easy, and convenient. The system now parks twice as fast as before, operating at speeds of up to 4 km/h. This development is designed to add significant value to customers by reducing the time and effort required to park, especially in congested areas.

The system is activated via a digital button on the car’s screen, and the progress of parking is displayed via a status bar. If the car is equipped with a 360° camera, the driver can select different camera views to assist with parking.

The updated Active Parking Assist is standard on most Mercedes-Benz models, including the E-Class, S-Class, EQS, EQE, and Maybach versions with the parking package, which includes a reversing camera. The system detects parking spaces while the vehicle is traveling below 35 km/h, displaying a green “P” symbol on the driver’s display.

It can point to rigid parking spaces with a height of 50 cm at each end. Once a space is found, the system guides the driver to engage reverse gear and begin the automatic parking process. With a perpendicular parking space, the driver can choose to park straight in or back into the space.

Safety is the focus, where the car uses sensors to monitor obstacles such as passing cars, cyclists, or pedestrians when backing up. If a hazard is detected and the driver does not react, the car will issue an audible or visual warning and can automatically initiate emergency braking to avoid a collision. This feature works for both automatic steering and manual parking.
