They were hot rivals. So much so that they did not have time for friendship. That’s how the Nadal – Djokovic rivalry was, which lasted for three decades, with 60 meetings, many of them truly spectacular.

Today, when Rafael Nadal announced his retirement, Djokovic responded with a heartfelt post on Twitter, thanking the 38-year-old for inspiring millions – including himself.

“Rafa, one text is not enough to express the respect I have for you and what you have done for our game,” wrote Djokovic. “He has inspired millions of kids to start playing tennis and I think that is the greatest achievement anyone could wish for. Your tenacity, dedication, fighting spirit will be taught for decades. Your legacy will live forever. Only you know what you had to endure to become an icon of tennis and sports in general.

“Thank you for pushing me many times in our competition which has had a great impact on me as a player.”

Djokovic, who has won 31 of 60 matchups, but lost 11 of 18 at majors, defeated Nadal en route to his gold medal at the Paris Olympics this year. It was the last meeting of the two. Djokovic also praised Nadal for his love for his country.

“Your passion for representing Spain is always amazing. I wish you a good farewell in Malaga and the Spanish Davis Cup team. I will be there in person to honor your professional work.”
