Threads explores advanced search features and AI summaries of trending topics
Threads made several changes to address longstanding complaints from users. In this case, the company is testing improvements in its search and trending topics included in updates that Adam Mosseri described as “long overdue improvements.”
In search, Braids is testing the ability to search posts within specific date ranges and account-specific searches. The changes are similar to some of X’s advanced search capabilities and will make it easier for users to locate specific posts they want to revisit. The lack of advanced search in Threads has long been frustrating and until now, the most reliable way to search Threads posts was to use Google.
Weaves is also experimenting with AI-powered summaries of its “trending now” topics, showing US users a few popular topics in the area. The app will also display an “expanded set” of up to 15 trends (currently, Braids only displays five trends at a time). The changes feel a bit like how the X handles trends, sometimes summed up by its AI “Grok” feature. (Grok has a somewhat mixed track record when it comes to accuracy, however.) It’s unclear how Meta plans to handle these summaries, though the company already uses Meta AI to summarize Facebook comments and conversations in groups.
The new test is the latest in a series of updates from Threads. Last week, Meta also announced a custom feed test, which made it official five days later, as well as algorithmic feed improvements for users. Those changes also happen to coincide with the massive increase in growth of Threads Bluesky’s competition. The decentralized service has grown to more than 20 million users and has had several days where its growth rivals Threads’ daily signup numbers.
