‘I’m in the McLaren in the pouring rain’: Jack Doherty’s McLaren accident, explained

A YouTube user posted his $200,000 McLaren sliding on live-streaming footage, appearing to look down at his phone while driving in the rain.
Jack Doherty was recording a live broadcast from Kick when the accident happened, with a clip of the broadcast circulating online showing the 20-year-old screaming “No, no, no!” as he failed to control it and hit the car on a busy road. More than 185,000 people were watching the broadcast of Doherty’s Kick at the time of the crash, TMZ reported.
A video posted on Doherty’s X account showed a netizen continuing to record as bystanders helped open the driver’s window. He can be heard asking one of them to hold his camera as he gets out of the wrecked car. As for his passenger, another clip that was also shared online showed Doherty worried about his wrecked car while throwing the camera at his still bleeding cameraman and telling him, “Michael, here. Michael, you have your movie on that phone, too.”
In a YouTube video posted on his channel in June 2023, Doherty revealed that he bought a McLaren for $202,850, less than a month after buying a Lamborghini and a Tesla. When he drove his brand new car for the first time, Doherty said “it’s going to crash this car, mark my words.”
Shortly after the accident went viral on Saturday, Doherty’s account was removed from Kick. A spokesperson for the streaming service said in a statement sent to NBC News that Kick “does not support illegal activity, which is why we took immediate action to block this creator from the platform.”
After the accident, Doherty has been “begging” viewers on TikTok Live for donations. In a screen recording posted on X, the YouTuber encourages his followers: “Everyone double tap the screen, we’re almost at a million likes, let’s see how fast we can hit it.
“[TikTok user] thanks for the galaxy, bro. I just followed you back. Guys let’s see how fast you can beat my galaxy [target] – I’ll follow everyone back once we get it. ” Sending a galaxy “gift” on TikTok Live costs the sender the equivalent of $13–$15 in real money, of which the streamer will get a cut.
During TikTok Live, Doherty also defended herself when it came to the accident. “I’m making a hydroplane. I’m at McLaren in the rain, what do you expect? You never drive [sic] McLaren.” But who is this asking for donations?
