Dreams and bucket lists are not the privilege of the few, and the creation of great courses thrives beyond the stone gates of private clubs. Across the country there are an amazing number of excellent golf courses available for every golfer.

That’s why we put a lot of time and energy into compiling our Top 100 Playables in the US list, which is based on the same voting process as our main US list, the latest version of which we published last week.

Some of these lower courses – such as Belvedere (No. 40), Firestone (No. 53), Cape Arundel (No. 63) and Bay Hill (No. 71) – are, in fact, private, but allow outdoor play . under certain circumstances. At Golf, we love this model. After all, it has served UK clubs for over a century. For those lucky enough to be members of clubs like these, the income from playing outside helps keep membership costs in check. Most importantly, these open policies allow course enthusiasts to sample the game’s high-quality artworks. We all win when the lines between private and public are blurred and the costs of sports come down.

In the meantime, we’re excited to celebrate a course like Lawsonia, which made both of our 2024-25 lists and cost me over $100 when I played there in September. In America, there aren’t enough examples of high-rise buildings being married to green fees in the $100 range. But elite buildings, period? In that, our nation has plenty.
