BAKU, Nov 17 (IPS) – “We will not rely on capitalist thinking to work for our liberation war. More investments will not build houses after the floods because they are not profitable. Corporations will not overthrow the industrial and agricultural complex that completes our invasion.”
This is what the Alliance of Non-Governmental Radical Youths and the People’s Rising for Climate Justice Youth jointly led this youth action at COP29.
“That’s why we’re here to fight for technical details to avoid the damage that money can cause. We can’t accept more loans and more debt. Climate funds cannot ‘finance’ the climate crisis in electricity markets or fault solutions.”
Speaking to IPS, Alab Mirasol Ayroso said that the action of the youth is about “their needs as young people. We talked about fossil fuels, the elimination of fossil fuels and more importantly, we talked about false and military solutions. In particular, really about recognizing human rights in these discussions, in these spaces where we can have real solutions if we only listen to the people on the ground.”
Taken from all corners of the world, young people have come together on issues that are important to them. The issues they say are not the main agenda of the COP29 negotiations. They sang, chanted and, in turn, made powerful speeches about climate change, peace and unity, human rights and the environment, the end of fossil fuels, climate debt and that rich countries and big polluters should pay.
Hajar, one of the speakers at Youth Action, emphasized that “the richest nation must face its colonial history and make meaningful progress in recovering the losses and damages caused by the extreme weather. In terms of the elimination of the military and its connections with finance, there is a big capitalist market. , murder, and exploitation but when we ask for money, there is always the same answer.
Ayroso says that young people can see through the smoke screen, the hypocrisy, the double talk, the lack of commitment to the climate and the youth agenda: “There is a lot of money. There is enough money around, but we also know that it will go to war. , wars and genocide. There is no political will and that’s why we don’t want to be sidelined and silenced.
“When the fire rises. When the smoke rises. When the people rise. Do you hear us singing? The end of fossil fuels. The end of fuel. When the water rises. When the flood comes in. When the people stand up. You hear us singing the natural oil,” they sang.
Youth want direct access to indigenous peoples, youth, children, workers, women, LGBTQIA and people with disabilities. We pledge to unite at COP29 “until the last minute. We are in these halls to fight for our rights. There is no climate justice without human rights.
