Otto Wallin: Joshua Shouldn’t Take Dubois Rematch

Otto Wallin advises that Anthony Joshua should not face IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois again after he was destroyed by him in five rounds on September 21. Former AJ knock-out victim Wallin sees no reason why Joshua (28- 4, 25 KOs) take the second fight unless he thinks he can win.

Wallin says that given the way Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) was able to beat Joshua, it looked like AJ wasn’t ready to defend him. They weren’t ready for Dubois to fight hard, making it difficult for Joshua to set his feet to throw a right hand.

Joshua can’t get full power on his right and hit with accuracy when pressed by incoming fire. That was always a flaw in his game, and Dubois took advantage.

“I wouldn’t advise you on that,” said Otto Wallin speaking to Boxing News when he was asked if Anthony Joshua should take a rematch with Daniel Dubois. “Right now, I don’t see the reason for that. The simple answer is no, he should never play again.”

Joshua would be crazy if he took a rematch with Dubois because this guy is not good for him. He’s too small, strong, and tough to mess with. Dubois could have knocked Joshua out early in the rematch, and that would have messed things up with the Tyson Fury fight.

“Dubois did a really good job. With Joshua, I felt like I was stuck. He did not join the war. That was Dubois’ night. “He came out and he was able to beat Joshua very easily,” said Wallin about how he was very impressed with the way Dubois played, and he stayed that way.

“When I fought Joshua, he had good defense. I felt it was hard to beat him, but Dubois got everything. “He had really low hands, which surprised me, and he had his chin up,” Wallin said of Joshua.

“He also couldn’t use his feet. It looked like Joshua was working on the count, I thought they thought it would be easy to beat Dubois because we saw in the Hrgovic fight that he hit a lot of 1-2s. “I think they saw that Joshua would be able to sit easily,” said Wallin.

Joshua and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, wouldn’t have fought Dubois if they didn’t believe they could use the leaky defense he showed against Filip Hrgovic. Hearn must think that Joshua would have no problem putting his right hand on Dubois because there is no way that they would agree to fight him if they thought that it would be difficult to beat him or that his offense would kill him.

“You could see at the start of the fight that Joshua was throwing a right hand, but he failed to land it well on Dubois, which was surprising. They must have worked on that defense.

“I think they thought Joshua was going to be able to land a right hand and take him out, but I think what happened was Dubois was so aggressive that he pushed Joshua back. Therefore, they were scared, and it was difficult for Dubois to attack them in this fight,” said Wallin.

Dubois and his trainer, Don Charles, seemed to know that Joshua would struggle to apply pressure, and hit hard. He seemed unable to load his right hand as he wanted. When Joshua was wearing down Dubois in the fifth, Daniel was giving him time by standing on the outside and hesitating rather than attacking the way he did in rounds 1 through 3.
