Valve is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2 with a big update
That’s right Half-Life 2To mark the 20th anniversary, and in celebration, Valve released a special update that adds the first and second episode expansions to the base game so you can play it all straight, along with a two-hour documentary, developer commentary, and more. More. The game is also free on Steam until November 18. Valve’s announcement itself is an interactive experience – hold the gravity gun at the bottom of the page and you can pick up almost anything on the screen and throw it around (including that can, which you can put in the trash).
“The whole map is inside Half-Life 2 it’s being looked at by Valve’s level designers to fix long-standing bugs, restore lost content and features over time, and improve the quality of a few things like light and fog map fixes,” the team said. The release notes are extensive, including updates to graphics settings, gamepad controls and the Steam Deck menu. Valve has also published old demo videos from the show Half-Life 2‘s development.
This birthday celebration also brings good news for anyone who couldn’t get their hands on a copy Raising the Bara 2004 behind-the-scenes book that has since become a coveted collector’s item: an expanded second edition is coming in 2025. This new version adds concept art from Episodes One and Two, as well as “ideas and explorations of Episode Three that never appeared before.”
