After several years and many delays, Sony’s Kraven the Hunter The movie will finally release in less than a month. (Hopefully, assuming there’s no sudden last-minute change.) The film sells itself by asking two questions: first, do you want to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson play one of Spider-Man’s most popular villains, albeit in the story the villain himself? Second, do you want to see him wreak so much violence against poor people?
Recently, Sony released a behind the scenes video in which Taylor-Johnson and director JC Chandor (A Very Violent Year) talked about their upcoming film. In between their sound bytes are clips of Kraven basically becoming a murderous thug: he chases cars barefoot, climbs the tallest buildings with ease, and kills a bunch of dudes in a bunch of badass ways. You’ve probably seen a lot of these in previous trailers, but they’re still brutal, given how many of them he pulls out by using anything within grabbing distance. (RIP to the guy pointed at the rebar.)
The Kraven the first R-rated superhero from Sony, which is Poison movies of the past sometimes felt as corny as PG-13 fare. For Chandor, this basically had to be rated R, as an acceptance of violence made for a “very honest” film. In addition to being an original film, he described it as “a family story and a good old gangster story.” Taylor-Johnson echoed that sentiment by pointing out that Kraven is just using the skills he grew up learning from his father, played by Russell Crowe. Both men emphasized how the original their movie is compared to other cape films: real locations, real adventures by Taylor-Johnson, all this for what the actor calls “a raw, dirty, real-world movie.”
We will see how everything actually happens when Kraven the Hunter will be in theaters on December 13.
