Blizzard pulled off a rare surprise today by introducing actual memories Warcraft and its sequel to commemorate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. These updates of the hit RTS games are available now and look to combine retro aesthetics with some modern sensibilities.
The remasters feature “brand new, hand-drawn graphics that capture the original art style from each game.” Players will be able to switch between original images and recreated versions in real time. If the trailer is anything to go by, the games look purdy. The simple animations match the vibe of the two games well.
The first one Warcraft it gets some serious quality-of-life changes to make the game more appealing to a modern audience. The update includes support for 16:9 resolution and modern control options. For example, players can now right-click to move units instead of relying on hotkeys.
Both launchers also received “various UI and UX improvements such as tooltips and health bars, target selection screens, and expanded unit selection.” The first games put strict limits on how many units could be selected at once, so the latter is a nice improvement.
Warcraft 2 it will also be available in multiplayer sessions. Franchise manager Brad Chan said during today’s 30th anniversary livestream that “all custom maps will still be fully interactive and playable.” These reminders are available now. Warcraft 1 it’s $10 again Warcraft 2 it’s $15.
Today’s 30th anniversary broadcast also dropped all sorts of other nuggets beyond the remasters. Warcraft 3: Remastered got a big update today that fixes a lot of long standing issues. Blizzard also announced that a related mobile title Warcraft Arclight Rumble will be playable on PC from December 10, albeit as a beta.
Developer reboots WoW: Classiccomplete with “new, new places.” WoW: Classic 20th Anniversary Edition will be available on November 21 and will feature PvE and PvP servers, in addition to Hardcore locations.
WoW Classic it also gets a new (old) extension. Pandora Classic Mists it will be available next year. Check out the trailer above for proof.
