The Terrorifier 3 was a box office hit—the latest success of the low-budget, gleefully gory horror franchise, with (likely) at least one more film on the way. But The scary one Series distributor Cineverse is also looking for the next horror flick, and is turning to a 1980s franchise that’s ripe for a revival, especially since The Terrorifier 3is about a mentally disturbed Santa Claus: Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Deadline has the scoop on Silent Night, Deadly Night reboot, reports that it will be written and directed by Mike P. Nelson. Nelson is no stranger to franchise revivals; target 2021 Wrong turn reboot, an entertaining entry in a franchise that had run out of steam. He also wrote and directed the crossover episodes “No Wake” and “Ambrosia” for V/H/S/85which means you are responsible for one of the V/H/S series’ most surprising twists—no small feat.
New Silent Night, Deadly Night it will have the main manufacturers of the original 1984 board for more authenticity; The Terrorifier 3Brad Miska, who was instrumental in bringing Damien Leone’s creations to the masses, is one of the executive producers.
According to the trade, Silent Night, Deadly Night it’s aiming for a 2025 theatrical release. The November-December run will make sense of the season—although the Halloween season will work: The Terrorifier 3featuring Art the Clown’s own holly jolly misadventures, hits screens in mid-October.
The first one Silent Night, Deadly Night it’s about a kid named Billy who saw his parents killed at the hands of a killer in a Santa suit, then grew up to be…a killer in a Santa suit. It has spawned several sequels (the second half is guilty of the infamous “garbage day!” meme), though the latest series entry is more of the “name only” variety. In the ’80s, a sleazy film depicting Santa Claus as a homicidal maniac was seen as outrageously shocking, and the film was highly controversial. This is not possible at this time, especially in the backgroundThe Terrorifier 3 the world.
There’s no word on what direction Nelson’s version might take—hopefully he’ll keep the nightmare-inducing older character in the story—but Deadline’s quote from him more than conveys his excitement.
“It’s an opportunity to work with the producers involved in this first game Silent Night, Deadly Night and sharing with The Terrorifier 3 the team is an honor,” he told the traders. “I’ll never forget walking into a video store at the mall when I was five years old and seeing that poster for the first movie. I was in awe and I started to think about what shocking things would happen. Being a part of the film’s legacy so many years later is crazy! I look forward to continuing the production, and expressing my new perspective on this fascinating story. Billy is back!”
