How long do you think you can stay independent? YouTube creator Norme is putting that question to the test, now 500-plus hours into his month-long “alone in jail” live stream effort.
Why? For ideas, of course.
Norme, who has more than a million subscribers, is no stranger to the challenges of live streaming. Some of his achievements, according to his YouTube biography, include not blinking for 2 hours and 6 minutes, and eating an aloe vera. An Australian YouTuber also set out to break the record for longest stay awake. He managed 264 hours, well short of the official record of 453 hours.
When he began his latest challenge on October 16, Norme hoped to get in the blood by live-streaming his solitary confinement, “to see if I’m crazy.” At the time of this writing, you have 550 hours, a total of over 22 days. He has 200 hours left to reach his 30-day goal.
If you stalk, you’ll find a 19-year-old sometimes moving, sometimes lying on the ground, in pitch black. The camera points down from the ceiling into a small room, with a mattress visible on the floor and a gaping hole in the wall (a result of the test period in particular perhaps?).
Although the YouTuber sometimes leaves the room for short periods of time, viewers have begun to express concern for his mental well-being, with one commenting, “this is really stressful.” Another wrote, “I will pay $10,000 to stop this.”
Others, however, are rooting for the YouTuber to finish what he started. “It’s been 23 days and you have 7 days left to get this bro,” another person wrote. “Keep the grind going mate,” added another. Text-to-speech messages are also enabled, allowing viewers to have their messages read aloud for Norme and all other viewers to hear.
Norme also benefits while broadcasting live, as viewers can purchase Super Chats to highlight their message in a live chat. For $10 “Norme gets food,” $5 and he’ll do a handstand, $20 for “straightjacket for 15 minutes,” and $50 for “mouth tape for one hour.”
Around the fifth day, the YouTuber started raving about “intergalactic aliens,” according to Dexerto reports. On the 12th day, he sank down and said, “I might as well quit. I’m allowed to quit.”
