Paul Waring set the European tour record 36-hole in Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Paul Waring shot the best of his career to post a career-low 11-under 61 in the second round of the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday and take a five-stroke lead into the weekend. The first European Tour final.
The Englishman ranked No. 229 hit a 3-wood draw from about 260 yards to within 4 feet of No. 18 and hit a birdie putt to move to 19-under par for the tournament.
The European Tour confirmed to the Associated Press that the 36-hole total is a tour history.
Waring, who opened with a 64 on Thursday, made nine birdies and an eagle in a bogey round at Yas Links and set the record.
First-round leader Tommy Fleetwood of England (68), Johannes Veerman of the United States (67) and Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard (65) and Thorbjorn Olesen (67) tied for second place at 14 under.
Rory McIlroy triple bogeyed No. 17 for his second consecutive 67 and was nine strokes off the lead.
McIlroy can clinch a sixth Race to Dubai title with a win this week.
