Interim WBC junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr’s father, Vergil Sr, denies they turned down an offer to fight Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. Vergil Sr. says no gift sent.
Boot Ennis’ father, trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis, told Boxing News that Vergil Ortiz Jr. (22-0, 21 KOs) “They’ve already asked about that and they’ve said no to that.”
Vergil Sr says yes There is NO offense. Vergil Sr. seems interested in the Boots Ennis fight, and it’s understandable why. His son, Ortiz Jr., would be facing his biggest name ever, and it would be the focus of the clash for fans watching on DAZN PPV.
“I have already spoken to the Hon [Turki Alalshikh]and we will fight Vergil Ortiz 100%,” said Eddie Hearn, promoter of Boot Ennis.
Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya said this week Thursday on X that he wants a “Vergil Ortz vs. Boots” as part of a 5 vs 5 tournament with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
There would be very good money for Vergil and Boots (32-0, 29 KOs) to make in the 154 fight. It will take courage from Ennis because Vergil Ortiz Jr. he’s one of the best fighters in the junior middleweight division, and there’s a very good chance he can beat Boots.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. he recently beat interim WBC 154-lb champion Serhii Bohachuk via a 12-round majority decision on August 10 in Las Vegas. It was the type of fight of the year, with both fighters throwing sound bombs. Vergi Jr’s face was marked, and he finally found someone who would withstand his power without wilting. The scores were 114-112, 114-112 for Ortiz Jr., and 113-113.
On Saturday, November 9, Boots defends her IBF welterweight title against Karen Chukhadzhian (24-2, 13 KOs) in a 12-round rematch at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Ennis already beat Chukhadzhian a year ago, winning a 12-round unanimous decision on January 7, 2023, at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.
It was a one-sided fight, with Boots winning over the defensive-minded Chukhadzhian 120-108 on all three scorecards. These are the types of fights that Ennis will be sticking to if he chooses to stay at welterweight rather than move up to 154 to challenge the likes of Vergil Jr who is the interim WBC champion, Bakhram Murtazaliev who is the IBF champion, Sebastian Fundora who is the WBC and WBO champion and the WBA belt. -owner Terence Crawford.
Ennis, 27, has repeatedly told fans that he wants to stay at welterweight to collect all the belts so he doesn’t care. That doesn’t look like it’s going to happen because the champions are looking for a gold mine to fight the Boots. If the money is big enough, Ennis might change his mind and face Vergil Jr. at the age of 154 because it would be a good opportunity to increase his fame overnight if he wins.
