Nelly Korda competes for the LPGA player of the year award
SHIGA, Japan — Nelly Korda won her first LPGA Player of the Year award on Sunday when it was statistically impossible for anyone to catch her in a points-based tournament.
Korda had to skip two competitions during the Asian swing due to a minor neck injury that slowed his practice. Japan’s Ayaka Furue would have to win more LPGA events to catch Korda. Furue tied for 10th place at the Toto Japan Classic.
Korda has won six times this year, including a major tournament. He won five straight tournaments at the start of the season to tie the LPGA record.
This marks the second year in a row that an American player has won the LPGA’s top prize. Lilia Vu won the prize in 2023 with two great powers. The last time an American won the LPGA player of the year in consecutive years was Betsy King in 1993 and Beth Daniel in 1994.
Korda, the world No. 1 ranked player in the women’s world, has two tournaments left as she tries to win the CME Globe race, which is decided at the end of the season on November 21-24.
