Samsung may launch its own ‘augmented reality’ wearable device next year

It sounds like Samsung is hoping to launch its own augmented reality (XR) wearable device sometime next year. The company outlined its vision for 2025 in its latest earnings report, where it said it is looking to “improve connectivity between products, including the upcoming XR devices, to improve the user experience in the Galaxy ecosystem.” Samsung first revealed that it was working on a wearable device with augmented, mixed and virtual capabilities at the Galaxy S23 Unpacked event last year. It will run a version of Android designed by Google specifically for wearable displays, and will be powered by a Qualcomm chip.

As 9 on 5 Google notes, previous reports said Samsung would release a developer version of the wearable in October 2024, but that apparently didn’t happen. Samsung didn’t share concrete details about the device’s launch in its earnings report, so there’s no guarantee the wearable will be available next year.

During the company’s earnings conference call, Samsung EVP Jaejune Kim also hinted at the possibility of creating an affordable foldable phone. Kim said that because foldables have a “high level of product satisfaction,” the company is “looking at ways to lower the barriers to purchase” so that more people can afford it. A Samsung executive previously denied rumors that there was a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold, so it’s unclear if the company has changed its mind or if it’s only working on a cheaper version of the Z Flip. In addition, Kim revealed that Samsung is “preparing a new breed” for those who “want a powerful and innovative mobile experience,” although he may be referring to the company’s expanded wearable device.

Of course, Samsung has already confirmed that they will launch the S25 series of phones next year. It also emphasized plans to focus on AI features, as well as developing AI offerings designed specifically for foldable phones.
