Jeffrey Guan is still chasing the top golf courses despite losing his vision
Australia’s Jeffrey Guan says he will continue to pursue his dream of playing in major golf tournaments even though he is permanently blind in his left eye after being hit in the face by a ball during a tournament last month.
The 20-year-old suffered a fractured left cheekbone and a cruciate ligament after being hit in a pro-am tournament in September. Since then he has undergone two operations and will not be able to play for at least six months.
The incident happened a week after Guan made his PGA Tour debut at the Procore Championship, where he missed out.
In a statement on Thursday, the PGA of Australia said Guan had permanently lost his left vision. Golf’s governing body and the Australian Sports Foundation launched an online fundraiser to raise $500,000 for Guan.
“As you can imagine, this whole situation has not only cost a lot but has affected me and my family emotionally and psychologically,” Guan said in a statement. “The thought of all my years of hard work and training, and the sacrifices of my family, had just been thrown out the window.
“I will continue to work hard and do my best to achieve my dream. These four weeks have been the hardest of my life, but I am mentally strong and I will be ready to overcome any obstacles in the future…. I will be back.”
