Sustainable Tiny Home: A Wind Turbine Nacelle Converted into a Tiny House

European powerhouse Vattenfall and Superuse Studios have turned a and left-the large container on top of the wind turbines that houses the essential components-becomes a small, continuous housing. Using a nacelle from a Vestas V80 2-MW turbine that was decommissioned after 20 years of service, the project reuses a 376-square-foot nacelle, demonstrating the potential for flexible reuse of materials. This unique tiny home is on display at Dutch Design Week 2024 in Eindhoven.

The building, which is 13 meters wide, 32 feet long and 10 meters high, was equipped with essentials such as electricity, water pipes, and electrical installation, thanks to the cooperation of various partners. Made of strong plastics, reinforced with glass fiber, the nacelle modification works as another eco-friendly way of disposalalthough the information itself is challenging to recycle.

Solar panels on the roof provide a maximum power of 1,800 watts, enough to run the home’s systems, while a solar water boiler and heat pump provide hot water and climate control. Other features include local ventilation, wall-mounted panels, and an electric vehicle charging station.

Inside, warm wood decor includes a bathroom, kitchen, and a combined bedroom and living area. Sustainable and recycled furniture fills the interior, including a table made from a recycled wind turbine blade, highlighting the project’s emphasis on reusing materials.

Jos de Krieger, partner at Superusenoted the large number of similar nacelles found around the world, offering opportunities for sustainable housing and other applications. He emphasized that if such a complex project is possible, the simple application, that much can be improved, making it a new solution for retired wind turbines that need to be renewed.
