Google expands AI Overview in Search to more than 100 countries

In a blog post today, Google said it will make AI Overview in Google Search available to users in more than 100 countries. Google says people love AI Overview, so the company plans to reach 1 million users every month. Additionally, Google is adding multilingual support, which means users in Japan can get AI-generated summaries in Japanese, for example.

If you’re not familiar with AI Overview yet, it’s a feature available in Google Search. Google’s Gemini AI model will generate a summary every time you search for something. This summary appears at the top of the page. Besides answering questions, it can also serve as a meal plan, a vacation planner and a brainstorming tool, among many other things.

This update follows several that have been released over the past few months since the launch of the AI Overview in May. The most recent update before this one allowed users to visit websites by clicking on links within the AI overview text. Google says this has resulted in increased traffic to “supporting websites.” However, some publishers and sites fear that previews are destroying their traffic by being the first thing people see.

News like this is not surprising, as Google has been putting as much AI into Search as possible. The AI overview also caused controversy after the AI told people to put glue on the pizza. Although that has been fixed, Google is blocking AI answers from appearing when users search for other courses.
