Venom 3 Takes a Decent Opening Weekend with Overseas Help
This weekend marks the end of an era and closes the story of Sony’s Venom. Since 2018, Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock has been a marvel doing goofy-ass slapstick in ways that have offended some but amused others, and Venom: The Last Dance it’s promised to be the duo’s last outing of some sort before another iteration of Eddie (or another character entirely) dons an alien leather suit. And the audience responded to it with “ehhhhhhh…”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the gooey threequel is looking at a domestic box office of $51 million at the time of writing, well below the initial estimate of $65 million placed on the previous release. In comparison, the first film debuted to $80.2 million in North America (a then-record for October 2018 films), and in 2021. Let there be massacres it started at $90 million, which was impressive at the time because of the pandemic. The international audience came in hand in hand; apparently it does a lot outside of North America, and is expected to pull in $124 million for a reported worldwide total of $175 million.
The Last Dance it’s open to negative reviews and word of mouth, and it probably doesn’t help other people throw their Halloween party. Still, it took the top spot over the weekend, knocking with joy Smile 2 down to second place; the horror sequel made another $10.3 million domestically and $12.5 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $83.7 million. And speaking of horror movie sequences, Variety reports The Terrorifier 3 on target to make another $4.5 million and end the weekend at $44 million, triple the combined total of its predecessors.
Venom has an upcoming weekend that’s all about him, as far as genre films go. Things really kick off week two with A24 religious horror A rebel and a post-apocalyptic flick Height on November 8. The following weekends look for Christmas action Red One (November 15), Gladiator II again Villains: Part I (November 22), and Mowana 2 (November 27).
