Could Alex de Minaur be making a late charge to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals?
The Australian advanced to the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after Flavio Cobolli was forced to retire trailing 7-6(2), 3-1. The Italian was on a break in the tenth game, but was unable to fight due to a shoulder injury.
“I felt a little more comfortable with the way I was playing and moving, I think it was a pretty good level,” said de Minaur, who improved to 43-14 on the season. “Obviously, I don’t want to end this game in any way.
“I wish Flavio a speedy recovery. He’s a hell of a player, he’s incredibly talented, and I’m sure the whole tennis world wants to see him back on the court very soon.”

De Minaur is ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, just 265 points behind eighth-ranked Andrey Rublev, who plays in Basel on Friday. The 25-year-old is set to make his Nitto ATP Finals debut after an impressive season that has put him in strong contention.
“I’m doing my best to focus on myself,” said de Minaur, when asked about the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. “I don’t expect much, I don’t know how the body will recover. If I continue to spend time on the court, that’s a good thing.”
De Minaur won 88 percent (21/24) of points after his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats, in a hard-fought opening set. The second seed will next face #NextGenATP Jakub Mensik for a place in the last four of the ATP 500.
