Edgar Berlanga Giving Money To Mexican Fans
Edgar Berlanga has been cashing in on his beach holiday in Mexico this week, as he celebrates his big rematch against three-time super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez on September 14.
It is not clear whether the people Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) was giving money to on the beach were his real fans. Berlanga is smart to use this technique of giving dough for photo-op purposes to give the illusion of being worshipped.
It is estimated that Berlanga made $1 million to $3 million from this fight. There is no measure of what Berlanga has found in regards to PPV. He is said to have brought it in 650,000 to buy on DAZN PPV, which are great numbers.
Last month, Canelo defeated the 27-year-old Berlanga via a 12-round unanimous decision at T-Mobile Arena. Despite Canelo’s size, he outclassed Berlanga, winning by scores of 118-109, 117-110 and 118-109.
Berlanga’s Road to the Canelo Rematch
Berlanga of Brooklyn, New York He hopes to face # 2 WBC Jaime Munguia next on PPV another Mexico vs. Puerto Rico meeting. Berlanga believes that the victory of Munguia (44-1, 35 KOs) will put him in a position to face Canelo again.
Berlanga’s other plan is to defeat Munguia and take the IBF belt from William Scull. Having defeated Munguia and Scull, Berlanga would have put himself in a good position to be selected by Canelo for another lucrative fight that would earn him millions.
It is questionable whether Canelo would be willing to fight Berlanga again, even if he beats Munguia and Scull. Canelo’s victory over Berlanga was so close that it would look bad if he turned around and returned with him. Berlanga will have to do more than defeat Munguia and Scull to win the second fight.
Scull didn’t do well last weekend, taking the vacant super middleweight title with a controversial 12-round decision win over Vladimir Shishkin in Germany.
Promoter Eddie Hearn said he wants to bring Berlanga back for a fight in New York or Puerto Rico. Journeyman Gabriel Rosado he is a rumored opponent in the spotlight.
The ideal way for Berlanga to get a second fight against Canelo would be to move up to 175 and defeat two or three of these fighters:
– David Benavidez
– Joshua Buatsi
– Dmitry Bivol
– David Morrell
– Artur Beterbiev
Berlanga may lose badly to all of those fighters, but fighting them is probably the only shot he has at getting a rematch with Canelo. Beating Scull, Munguia, and Rosado won’t do it.
