Bill Haney blasted Ryan Garcia today on social media for his bold speech even though he never took a world title to back it up. Papa Haney says Ryan “laughter” but he hasn’t signed up for a random drug test. He sees Ryan as “fake.”
Will Ryan Garcia forgive Bill Haney?
Bill wants that as the first step before any reunion talks begin with his son, Devin, who suffered a heartbreaking loss to Kingry earlier this year on April 20 in Brooklyn, New York.
Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) tested positive for the banned PED Ostarine in that fight, and Devin sued him for Battery, Fraud, and Breach of Contract. Bill has not said if Devin (31-0, 15 KOs) will drop the charge if Ryan submits to a drug test and agrees to a rematch.
In the end, Ryan might give Haney a reprieve after he cools down and forgets about the crime. That could depend on whether the verdict is in Haney’s favor and Ryan stands to pay him millions. If that’s the case, the chances of Haney ever getting a repeat are pretty slim.
Ryan will not want to appease Bill and give permission just to get the case dropped. Ryan won’t say yes to a drug test, a repeat, and a chance to take the spoils from Devin’s competition. He is arrogant, and he will know that he is sacrificing a lot just to get the case dismissed, and he may not agree.
The Sharks are waiting for Devin at 147
Haney will have to continue his career, fight the best fight he can, and hope he doesn’t get sent into retirement. Devin’s options at welterweight are all risky and pay less compared to a rematch with Ryan.

None of those popular PPV fighters are popular in the US, and it’s doubtful that Haney would be the favorite of any of them, even against Conor Benn. It’s clear that Haney’s career will be successful once he reaches the depths of the 147-lb division. He lacks strength and a little intelligence to be able to compete in that weight class.
Again, no one can argue that he can make the money he got from fighting Ryan. None of these guys have 12 million followers on Instagram, and they can’t be advertised because of a lack of charisma. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn battles it out with Boot Ennis.
At this point, Haney’s stock is so low that another loss will reduce what little sales he has left. Considering Haney was a two-division world champion, he has moved up to the 140-lb division and will need compete among the sharks in the 147-lb division.
While that weight class is devoid of talent, the guys at the top have good power, and it’s hard to imagine a good future for Haney fighting in that division.
If you throw Haney against welterweight champions Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis or Brian Norman Jr, it won’t end well for him. Those two greedy sharks would feast on a tender morsel like Haney, who would have nothing to frustrate them but a few baby teeth.
It’s unlikely that Bill will target any of those champions for Devin’s welterweight world title, but Stanionis and Barrios could also be a threat to him. I don’t think Haney can beat any of those fighters, even though they are arguably paper champions.
If Bill saw how bad Devin’s condition was, he would get down on his hands and knees and beg Ryan to give his son a second chance because, besides, his job isn’t very important right now. It was all over by the time Devin moved up to 140, but the only reason he won his first fight at the weight class was that former promoter Eddie Hearn matched him with the old, slow guy Regis Prograis.
If Hearn was like Haney against Liam Paro or Subrial Matias, he probably would have been knocked out, and there would have been no chance of a Ryan Garcia fight for him. Haney should have stayed with Hearn because he was doing a good job of picking his opposition.
Some believe that even if Ryan did all those things, he would have to agree to be the B-side in the promotion, have his second name, and take a small cut. Once Ryan agrees to the drug test and the game again, will he have to keep crossing Bill’s tubes and toe the line to make it happen again? Can be.
Repetition May Not Benefit You
In the end, how does Ryan come out on top? Oscar De La Hoya said Haney-Garcia only did 300,000 PPV purchase for their April 20 fight on DAZN pay-per-view. Those numbers suggest that the boxing public was not happy to see that fight, which turned out to be not the case, with Ryan clearing the field for Haney.
Will the rematch bring big numbers after what fans saw last April? I don’t think so. If fans see a fighter eliminated, they are not willing to buy a replay on PPV. In this case, there may be less PPV buys due to Haney choosing to sue Ryan, because fans see that as a sign of weakness on his part.
If Bill wants Devin to get a rematch with Ryan, he should tell him to drop the charge, not make drug test demands because he’s going to be tested anyway, and take a small portion of the spoils based on his defeat last April.
Bill made a big deal about Ryan not winning any world titles, but the only reason Devin won his titles was because the division was watered down. He picked up his three belts from George Kambosos Jr. at the age of 135. He was promoted to WBC lightweight champion. At 140, Devin defeated the 35-year-old Prograis to win the WBC belt.
