It’s been a strange year for Sony’s heroes. After a lackluster debut for Low Crime Madame Weband with no animated Spider-Men or anything else to lean on, it’s all looking towards fall and winter as the studio delivers its finale. Poison movie has hit theaters and debuts a new leading anti-hero: Spidey’s longtime villain Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter. If our previous look at the film was anything to go by, he’ll be making blood late this year.
While we’ve already had a brief glimpse of the violent and dirty family drama in JC Chandor’s upcoming movie in its first trailer, at New York Comic Con last night, director and star Aaron Taylor-Johnson debuted a sneak peek of the film. it’s a movie about trying to show audiences what would make an R-Rated superhero movie stand out. Featuring dialogue with almost no Russian subtitles, the film opens in a snowy landscape as a lone truck drives down a quiet road. It turns out, as the truck pulls into the gas station, that it’s a prison van: a soldier gets out of the truck, ordering the inmates to follow a small break, including Kraven. As the truck pulls into a nearby prison, we step inside as Kraven and the other new inmates walk forward to retrieve their supplies, surrounded by guards and inmates alike who rattle the bars and bars to intimidate them. Kraven meets his cruel roommate, who tells him in Russian that he hates sharing his room with someone else. In agreement, Kraven responds, but tells his new “friend” not to worry about sharing—Kraven will only be locked up for three days.
Later, Kraven is bench pressing weights in the training yard, when two other inmates come up to him and try to stop him—he’s training in “private space,” they say, as they both lower their bodyweight. bar and on Kraven’s chest. He’s not worried though, as he backs away, lifting the weights before slamming them down, standing up, and smashing the faces of the two metal goons. “It’s an open place,” Kraven said, as we were taken out of his place to meet their looming boss: the head of the Kirov Gang. The gangster lives a life of luxury behind bars, in a meets-cell furnished office decorated with a leopard skin robe. a lot which is important after the gangster asks Kraven who he is. “I’m a hunter, I hunt men like you,” growled Kraven, only for the thug to declare the Hunter a legend. Kraven gives his name, bends down to feel the mat, and pulls one of the teeth out of the Tiger’s mouth to use as a rare sword, slashing his way through Kirov’s men before climbing atop the lead gangster’s desk. “There’s always a little truth in fairy tales,” Kraven warns him, before sinking a tooth into his neck, spraying blood with every stab.
From there, it’s chaos: the guard opens the door, startled by the bloodshed, for Kraven to run and almost run through him, sending him flying as Kraven cuts through the prison, swinging under bars again to reach the rooftops. Spotted by the floodlights, the guards give chase, shooting Kraven to no avail as he jumps and runs throughout the prison like a wild beast. After scaling the walls, Kraven bolts across the snowy tundras that surround the prison colony and disappear into distant storms, ending the sequence.
But that’s not all Sony had to show. The studio also released a short clip of the scene that was first seen The KravenThe first trailer, drives the character’s brutality even further. Looking forward to the movie, the scene sees a group of armed soldiers preparing to attack Kraven in a dense forest. As merc after merc gets up from the cars, we see Kraven in his place, inspecting wall after wall of knives and swords, choosing his weapons. Back in the forest, the apprentice mercenaries are surprised after a large cat crosses their path, only to reveal that Kraven is among them, hiding in the bushes and stalking his prey.
Soon, things get brutal. In quick succession, Kraven picks off the mercenaries one by one in gruesome fashion: snapping a bear trap over one’s head, carving another open with one of his blades before burying the hatchet in the head of a third. Two of the more gruesome kills don’t directly involve Kraven: one mercenary trips a trip wire that sends a spiked log hurling at him, impaling him in a tree, and the other is caught in a set of bear traps with drag lines. he rode down the forest at high speed and ran into the cat on the stump of a nearby tree, and threw him into the river.
“When the studio gave us the opportunity to see if we wanted to do this as an R movie, we were like, ‘yes!'” Chandor told fans before launching the video at NYCC. “It was an amazing opportunity. It just kind of opened up some kind of grinding stuff on one side, and then some really hard grains. “
The pictures showed how intense it was Kraven the Hunter hopes to match its violence—we’ll have to wait until December 13 to see if it can match that intensity with its character work and cap off Sony’s strangely heroic year. Still, it will be ending 2024 on a bloody note, to say the least.
