Nick Kyrgios is preparing to return to the home world.
Speaking at a panel at SXSW (South By Southwest) in Sydney on Thursday, the Aussie confirmed his participation in the 2025 Australian Open.
“I’m going to play the Australian Open this summer,” he said. “I just remember playing in front of the home crowd. We have a great bunch of guys right now like Alex de Minaur who is playing amazing tennis. “
Struggling with knee and wrist injuries for the past 16 months, Kyrgios has been sidelined for nearly two seasons. Last year, he played one tour-level match at the BOSS OPEN in Stuttgart and lost to Wu Yibing.
“The injury I had was brutal … The surgeon said I might not be able to play again,” Kyrgios said. “But I said whatever, just try and get me another two to three years of my career … It’s been a brutal few years, but just to be there to play in front of my home crowd … I just want to be there. , lighting up the crowd and playing in front of my country.
“Whether it’s good or bad, it’s definitely going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it … the only motivation for me to come back and play is to try to win the grand slam, and I’m going to have another shot at it.”
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley is looking forward to finding the home favorite at Melbourne Park.
“We love that Nick is back to play in 2025 … he’s back at practice,” Tiley said. “He’s waiting to play, and we’re waiting to see Nick play… We’re going to make sure Nick is there playing in the big league.
“His preparation, we know he’s doing more than he did before, we know he wants to do it, we know he’s mentally prepared to be ready to play in January. He has to be physically fit to do that.”
