Qualcomm has canceled its Windows on ARM PC dev kit, otherwise called the Snapdragon X Elite Developer Kit. Refunds are issued, sales are suspended and kit support is suspended, . It was supposed to ship in June before it was delayed.
In an email to customers, Qualcomm listed everything down to quality control. It said the small PC “absolutely does not meet our standard performance standards” and “we have made the decision to discontinue this product and its support, permanently.” It is interesting that some kits for buyers. It remains to be seen whether those who received this unit will be returned.
As mentioned before, it was supposed to start again in June alongside the chips that power it. Qualcomm did not give a reason why it took months to make the decision to cancel the product.
Engineer Jeff Geerling received the kit and gave it a once over. He said it came with “boredom” and announced a lack of Linux support and resale restrictions. Geerling also discovered that the unit lacked an HDMI port, despite having all the chips in place for a DisplayPort to HDMI conversion.
Some speculated that this problem with the HDMI port caused production delays and even led to the eventual cancellation. To that end, Qualcomm emailed customers last month to let them know they plan to ship the dev kit with a USB-C to HDMI dongle instead of a traditional HDMI port.
Whatever the reason for the cancellation, this kit should have been an important piece of hardware to help devs port apps to Windows on Arm. Microsoft and Qualcomm have been urging developers to prepare their apps for Snapdragon X Elite laptops.
