Cowboy Bebop Maker New Anime
Adult Swimming has finally released a first look Lazarus, its an upcoming anime from Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe and Jujutsu Kaisen Studio Mapa photos.
Lazarus‘ the first visual trailer (which first appeared at San Diego Comic-Con behind closed doors, but was widely released today thanks to New York Comic Con), shows the main character Axel Gilberto on the run from the authorities. In doing so, you throw kicking cops, run over railroad tracks, and park across the sky of the anime’s futuristic cityscape. All the cool stuff you’d expect from a new-age Spike Spiegel-like character. I’ll spare you the play-by-play and let you enjoy your own smooth animation with the trailer below.
Now that you’ve seen the trailer, here’s what the anime is actually about. Lazarus is a sci-fi action series set in the year 2052. We are placed in a world that seems to be on the verge of real peace due to the creation of a painkiller drug called “Hapna” from a neurologist named Dr. Skinner.
Although the drug was marketed without side effects, it turned out that Hapna has a very serious three-year delayed effect that kills its user. Now, all of humanity is expected to die in 30 days unless a special team is called Lazarus reveals the antidote Skinner created before going AWOL. It’s a good thing this anime didn’t drop in 2020, otherwise people would have had questions. Here’s a look at its official poster.
Lazarus was first announced back at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Apart from seeing the interaction between Watanabe and Mappa, the series also has the distinction of having it John Wick director Chad Stahelski serves as the action choreographer and saxophonist Kamasi Washington produces the soundtrack.
If you have amped to sing Lazarus with the sole purpose of its ostensive binding Cowboy Bebop, you will be happy to know that the Japanese voice actors will have two familiar voices from the anime join its cast. Here’s their Japanese voice stream and where you might hear it first:
- Koichi Yamadera (Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop) as Dr. Skinner
- Megumi Hayashibara (Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop) as Hersch
- Mamoru Miyano (Chrollo Lucilfer from Hunter x Hunter) as Axel
- Maaya Uchida (Alluka Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter) as Chris
- Yuma Uchida (Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen) as Leland
- Makoto Furukawa (Saitama from One Punch Man) as Doug
- Manaka Iwami (Akane Kurokawa from Oshi and Ko) as Eleina
- Akio Otsuka (Yujiro Hanma from Baki Hanma) as Abel
“As I begin this creative journey, I can’t help but feel that this project will serve as the culmination of my work so far,” Watanabe wrote in a 2023 press release. “I hope you enjoy it.”
Lazarus will reportedly have 13 episodes and is scheduled to air on Adult Swim in 2025.
