YouTube is testing a new version of its Premium Lite subscription
YouTube is testing an update to its Premium Lite subscription tier. The user made discussions on social media this week, and today a representative of Google later confirmed to many other stores that the program is being tested in Australia, Germany and Thailand. The new version will have “limited ads,” which the fine print describes as mostly ad-free videos, “but you may see video ads for music and short content, as well as non-disruptive ads when you search and browse.”
The first Premium Lite subscription started in Europe in 2021, but it only lasted a few years, the video platform became an option in October 2023. The only benefit of the plan was to remove all ads; it didn’t offer offline viewing options or behind the standard Premium offering.
We’ve been able to confirm that the pricing model in Australia is $9 per month for Premium Lite, compared to $17 per month for full Premium access. That’s in line with the cost from the original Lite, which was about half the price of the regular plan. With the current cost of YouTube subscriptions – for an individual or a family option – a moderate choice can be quite attractive.
