JVC Kenwood Showcases AI-Powered Earphones with Built-in Camera at CEATEC 2024
In CEATEC Japan 2024JVC Kenwood showed its AI-assisted True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones with a small built-in camera. A unique feature of these headphones is the integration a camera that, when connected to Gen-AI in the cloud via smartphone, allows users to ask questions about their surroundings and receive audible answers directly through earphones. This hands-free, voice-activated system eliminates the need for the user to physically carry their smartphone, making it more convenient for those with visual impairments or people who would benefit from manual operation.
One important feature of the demo at CEATEC included i Nearphones HA-NP50Twhich were attached to a dummy’s head and connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth to access an AI service such as ChatGPT. During the demonstration, users can point an object in front of the earphone’s camera and ask, “What is this?” getting immediate sound feedback, such as pointing to a can of cola or a bottle of green tea.
Besides identifying objects, the AI-drive system can also provide more detailed information, such as the caller’s name and company affiliation, or translate foreign language signs if needed.
The potential applications of this technology are significant. For example, earphones can be an important tool for users with physical disabilities, acting as their “eyes” by providing real-time updates on road conditions or obstacles while walking. In addition, the ability to use smart features while listening to music adds another layer of ease of use, as users can interact with the AI without disrupting their audio experience.
Although the earphones are currently in the prototype stageJVC Kenwood continues explore their practical use cases and potential to benefit a wide range of consumers, from the elderly to the visually impaired. The technology can open up new ways to interact with AI while maintaining hands-free, intuitive control.
