I love being a tennis player

The 39-year-old Wawrinka became the second oldest player to win a match at the ATP 250 event in Stockholm, and the oldest since 1999. He will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round. Elsewhere in Stockholm, Tommy Paul, Dominic Stricker, Casper Ruud and Tallon Griekspoor reached the quarterfinals.

“You need to enjoy what you’re doing, and if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you need to keep going, and that’s what I’m going to do,” Wawrinka told SpilXperten’s Nicolas Albek after his 575th ATP win.

“Motivation must come from within. If you have to force yourself to stay motivated, then you are not passionate enough about what you are doing. It’s not easy every day, but I love being a tennis player, so it’s easy to push myself.”

Wawrinka says retirement is not in his plans, at least not yet.

“I have said that I am growing, and of course I will reach the end, but I still play well and I can compete when I play,” he said. “I enjoy what I do and I enjoy getting up to practice and still have the opportunity to play in a good tournament like here. As long as I’m still enjoying that, I’ll keep pushing a little.

“I think it’s amazing to be a tennis player and when I was a kid I wanted to do that as a career. I had the opportunity to win many trophies, even many big trophies and I had the opportunity to achieve a lot of what I call my dream. I will keep pushing.”
