Watch the moment North Korea blows up the roads connecting South Korea

Pictures released by South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense show North Korea bombing roads connecting it to South Korea.

It comes after Pyongyang vowed last week to cut roads and railways once seen as symbols of inter-Korean cooperation, in a bid to “completely separate” the two countries.

The Korean People’s Army (KPA) described the move as a “defensive measure to prevent war”, saying it was in response to South Korea’s military exercises and the continued presence of US nuclear weapons in the region.

It marks an increase in hostilities at a time when inter-Korean tensions are at their highest level in years.

After the explosion, South Korea’s military said it opened fire on its side of the border in a show of force, and stepped up surveillance of the North.
