Nelly Korda withdraws from two LPGA events with neck injury
Nelly Korda has withdrawn from the next two tournaments on the LPGA Tour’s Asia swing after injuring her neck during practice, she announced on Monday.
The tour is in South Korea this week for the BMW Ladies Championship, which starts on Thursday. The players will head to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur for the Maybank Championship next week.
Fans in these countries will miss the opportunity to see Korda, the world’s number 1 player who has won six times this season.
“Unfortunately, I have had to withdraw from the LPGA events in Korea and Malaysia due to a minor neck injury I picked up during practice,” Korda wrote on social media Monday evening. “I’m disappointed to miss these events and I apologize especially to my fans who were looking forward to seeing me play. I’m currently resting and working with my team to get better. Thank you for your support — it really means the world to me!”
Korda, 26, did not say when he plans to return to competition. The Asia swing concludes with the TOTO Japan Classic from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. The season ends three weeks later at the CME Group Tour Championship in his hometown of Florida.
All six of Korda’s victories this year came before June. He won five straight, culminating in the Chevron Championship, his second major career title.
Korda currently holds a nearly 1,235-point lead over New Zealand’s Lydia Ko in the season-long race to the top of the CME Globe. Korda is yet to win a season-long championship.
