5 tips to get the most out of YouTube TV

YouTube TV has gradually emerged as one of the best TV providers for those of us who are tired of renting cable boxes or carrying satellite dishes.

Whether you’re new to the service or a long-time user, here are some helpful features to get the most out of your subscription.

Customize the guide to hide channels

Yes, YouTube TV offers more than 100 channels for you to watch. No, not all are eligible. Thankfully, you can rearrange them to put your favorites at the top and hide the ones you haven’t watched.

To do so, click on your profile in the upper right corner, then Settings > Live guide from a web browser or your phone (unfortunately, it doesn’t work within TV apps). From there, you can drag and drop channels to rearrange them and change the visibility of the channels you want to hide.

Record everything

Content keepers, rejoice! YouTube TV offers unlimited cloud DVR storage at no additional cost. Make the most of this feature by recording anything that interests you remotely.

Use the “Add to Library” feature to collect movies, shows, and sports events that you want to watch later. Recordings are kept for nine months, giving you plenty of time to do it yourself.

Set up different user profiles

Each YouTube TV subscription allows for up to six user profiles, making them ideal for large families or roommates.

Invite everyone under your roof to create their own profile, which will keep each individual’s viewing history separate, provide personalized recommendations, and store individual DVR libraries.

Select the main profile in the upper right corner and then Settings > Family Sharing to manage profiles.

Use the remote ish trick

If you’re using a smart TV, scrolling through previously viewed channels was a bit awkward until the latest update.

If you haven’t used the new feature, holding down the select button on your remote control is now similar to the easy-to-use “previous channel” button found on TV remotes from the old days.

Take content on the go

Get the most out of your subscription by using the YouTube TV mobile app. With it, you can watch a lot of live TV or your DVR recordings anywhere with an internet connection.

You can also download recorded shows to watch offline and start a show on one device and continue watching on another. The app is available for both iOS and Android.
