The hottest robot of CES 2021 is back thanks to Casio
If you look at that Star Trek a passage about thoughts and feelings, I need one of those in my life (minus the hassle of instant reproduction), Casio has just the thing for you. The company is now taking pre-orders in Japan for Moflin, an adorable robot plushie with AI “emotional abilities” that debuted during CES 2021. Moflin, developed in collaboration with Japanese company Vanguard Industries, is intended to act as emotional support . a pet – fishing is your specialty, and the creators say that each robot has its own unique personality, it can change its mood depending on the situation and will form attachments to people over time.
It’s available in gray and blonde for a whopping ¥59,400 (about $400), and is expected to ship on November 7. There’s no word on a release outside of Japan.
Moflin doesn’t just return hugs. You have to talk to it, too, and it will respond with movements and sweet sounds. This interaction will help shape its character. “Moflin has the ability to learn and its personality will grow based on how it is handled,” Vanguard founder Masahiko Yamanaka said in a promotional video. It’s Bluetooth-enabled so it can communicate with an app, and it charges in a small nest to avoid breaking the illusion that it’s a real pet. When charging, it will just sleep. The fur is removable if you need to wash it, though.
Vanguard ran successful Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns for Moflin in 2020 but began shipping robots to backers in late 2023. Casio now handles production and distribution.
