BBCNihon Hidankyo, a group of Japanese atomic bomb survivors, has won the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.
Nobel Committee Chairman Joergen Watne Frydnes praised the “extraordinary efforts” “to achieve a world without nuclear weapons”.
The winner was announced at a ceremony in Oslo on Friday, where Mr Frydnes said the group had “been instrumental in the creation of nuclear power”.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has recommended the group’s use of witnesses to ensure that nuclear weapons must never be used again.
The Norwegian Nobel Institute said that 286 people have been nominated for this year’s peace prize, including 197 individuals and 89 organizations.
Appointments can be made by people in high positions, including members of national assemblies, governments and international law courts.
Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi won the award in 2023when he was honored for his work against the oppression of women in Iran.
