Liam Paro Says Devin Haney Wanted “Ridiculous Money” From Failed Negotiations

IBF light welterweight champion Liam Paro says Devin Haney asked for “stupid money” and was “not serious” in their failed attempts to negotiate a fight recently. The undefeated Paro (25-0, 15 KOs) says he stopped trying to put together a fight because Haney was expecting money.

Haney’s popularity has declined since losing to Ryan Garcia last April, and is in no position to command the big paydays he could have if he wins that fight.

The fact that Haney is still asking for “stupid money” suggests that his loss to Ryan has not registered with him because he is yet to do anything about the fact that he is an undefeated fighter. We see that a lot with fighters. When they are beaten, they still believe that they are weighing the bags as before. They need to participate mentally to understand that things are different for them.

The New York State Athletic Commission cleared Haney’s loss from his record, but fans still consider him a hit.

So he can’t pretend he’s still in the same place as before, commanding the same money because things are not the same now. He is a defeated fighter and many fans consider him washed up. To get back to where he was, he needs to rebuild his career by defeating A-level fighters at 140 or 147. As big as Haney is, he should move up to 154 and take on another champion at that weight. .

Paro will instead defend his IBF 140-lb title against Richardson Hitchins (18-0, 7 KOs) on December 7 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The event will be shown live on DAZN.

It is questionable whether Haney, 25, would have been able to make the IBF’s 10lb rehydration limit to fight Paro. That would require Haney to delay full rehydration until after the morning weigh-in on the day of the Paro fight. Could Haney keep his weight over 150 lbs until the morning of the fight?

“I wanted that fight for a long time. He sacrificed himself, and asked for an insane amount of money. He didn’t bring the belt to the table, we just continued. We could see that he was not serious,” said Liam Paro speaking to Fighthype about his efforts to organize a fight with Devin Haney.

Paro didn’t say what kind of money Haney is asking for to challenge him for the IBF belt, but it doesn’t matter now. He lost his chance.

Haney needs to start pushing for a rematch against Ryan Garcia because that is his best chance to get a big payday and get back on top. If Haney doesn’t get that fight because of his offense, he needs to move up to 147 and face a challenge from another champion in this division.

A fight with Mario Barrios or Eimantas Stanionis would give Haney an opportunity to take the belt at welterweight to help secure other important fights. Those are the most undefeated champions, but they still have a little pop in their hitting. If Haney’s boxing stamina has suffered since his loss to Ryan, he will have problems against the champion.
