LEGO Store Briefly Hijacked by Crypto Scam

If you were in a LEGO store this weekend, you may have seen a banner with a bunch of gold coins announcing that the toy brand is going crypto. Maybe that news surprised you, but no, LEGO isn’t really into crypto, its store website was recently taken over by hackers.

According to The Brick Fan, the banner seen below suddenly appeared on October 4, on the store’s main page overnight, proudly announcing “Our LEGO Coin is officially out!” Clicking on it will take you to an external marketplace that sells Lego Tokens for ethereum, which is commonly associated with web3 and blockchain. Users started posting about the banner and suspected hacking, which eventually caught the attention of the LEGO team. At the time of writing, there have been no further attempts to retrieve the banner or push LEGO Coin through a different channel, and the original banner LEGO Fortnite back to that high place. And if you are worried that, Engadget confirmed that clicking on that “buy now” banner link takes you to the collection.

How does this happen? LEGO isn’t saying, but it did release a statement to Engadget saying it had identified the cause of the issue and that the issue was “resolved promptly.” More importantly, the company confirmed that no user accounts were stolen or compromised at this time, and that customers “can continue to shop as usual.” The cause has been identified and we are taking measures to prevent this from happening again.”

Despite what LEGO says, it probably wouldn’t hurt Store users to handle this as they would break the general rule on any website and change their passwords if they happen. Crypto scams have become more common lately (not helped by AI deepfakes), so do everything you can to make sure you don’t get scammed by someone hoping to make you money.
