The three new features announced by Google at the beginning of the year are said to have started rolling out to Android. The tools — Anti-Crime Key, Offline Device Key and Remote Key — are intended to give users a way to quickly lock their devices when they’re swiped, so thieves can’t access any sensitive information. An Android journalist shared on social media that the first two tools appeared on the Xiaomi 14T Pro, and said that some Pixel users have already started to see Remote Lock.
The key to finding a crime is triggered by the actual act of snatching. The company said in May that the feature “uses Google AI to sense when someone is taking your phone out of your hand and trying to run, bike or drive.” In such a case, it will lock the phone screen.
Offline Device Lock, on the other hand, can automatically lock the screen after the thief disconnects the phone from the Internet. You can already lock your phone remotely with Google’s Find My Device, but a third feature, Remote Lock, lets you do so without having to fumble for your Google account password. All you need for this is “your phone number and a quick security challenge using any device.”
