Coach Calvin Ford looked stressed today, answering questions about why his fighter, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, chose Lamont Roach for his next team on December 14th instead of one of the talented lightweights fans want to see fight in Baltimore.
Ford’s response to why Tank is fighting Roach is not very positive, saying, “It’s good for the community.” The boxing public doesn’t think it’s good, and they’re the ones who buy Tank’s fights for $75.95 on PPV. This is not good for them.
Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs), a super featherweight who will step up to challenge Gervonta (30-0, 28 KOs) for his WBA lightweight title in Houston, has never defeated any A -level fighter during his 10th. – the work of the year.
Roach, 29, lost Jamel Herring in 2019 and recently defeated Feargal McCrory, Hector Luis Garcia, and Angel Rodriguez. Those aren’t exactly the best. Losing to Herring tells you all you need to know about Roach’s anti-Tank credentials.
Why Tank Fighting Roach

- That is the battle “in front” of the Tank
“They’ve known each other since the states, Silver Gloves, and everything. They grew up together,” said coach Calvin Ford in Fighthype, talking about Gervonta Davis who knew Lamont Roach Jr. since ancient times.
The fans don’t care if Tank Davis knew Roach when he got back on the block. They want to see Tank face the best at 135, like William Zepeda, Raymond Muratalla, Andy Cruz, Abdullah Mason and Keyshawn Davis.
“Roach and he had back-and-forth battles and so on. It’s going to be an interesting fight because Roach is coming to fight. I think it’s a great fight. Everybody’s saying all those things, ‘Ah, why Roach?’ Because he has taken the fight, and it is good for the community,” said Ford.
He does not say which community it is good for. Is this the community in Baltimore and Washington, DC? There are more fans around the country than that small section of the US Tank that he has to think about in order to change and stop his avoidance of the risk of combat that is capable of 135.
This is the third time Tank Davis has chosen a super featherweight star to defend his WBA lightweight belt. He had already fought 130 heavyweights Hector Luis Garcia and Leo Santa Cruz.
“People will do that. That’s what fans do. They criticize badly,” said Ford criticizing fighters when they take on weaker opponents, especially when they repeat their entire career like Tank Davis did.
“I remember when everyone said I should let Pitbull fight Tank again. They were talking about that, and when he won that belt [WBA light welterweight]boom. I am not involved in that. I just prepare him and prepare him to do well for the fans and so on.
“Like I said, we’re just focused on the fight in front of us, and that’s the fight in front of us,” Ford said of Roach as Gervonta’s next title defense on Dec. 14.
That response from Ford is not good enough, saying, “We’re focused on the war ahead of us.” That is not the answer. I think we need it Chief Investigator here to put Ford’s feet to the fire and get real answers to why Tank Davis is fighting Roach. It’s much deeper than what he says. There is some fear behind these decisions of Tank because it is easy money, which allows him to avoid risk.
