Microsoft is killing HoloLens 2
Microsoft is discontinuing production of its HoloLens 2 headset, according to an emerging report Load VR. The company has no plans for a follow-up device, telling customers that this will be the last chance to buy the headset before the stock runs out. When it was introduced, it was marketed as a tool for business buyers, so it didn’t enter the mass market. This move is not so surprising, considering that Microsoft has dropped the HoloLens 3 headset in 2022. We are waiting for an official line from the company.
It’s not a direct indication of the death of VR and AR, though. Apple’s Vision Pro isn’t even a year old, and both announced new hardware for the glasses last month. However, those last two companies’ take on AR is much smaller (and lighter) than HoloLens – if not more subtle.
