Edgar Berlanga’s ex-coach says he “can’t celebrate” the loss

Edgar Berlanga’s former trainer, Andre Rozier, says he “can’t celebrate” his recent loss to Canelo Alvarez. That’s not something you should be celebrating. Rozier feels that Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) should tell himself, “I need to do better.”
Fighters like Berlanga make a mockery of the sport by celebrating defeats, and getting titles they didn’t earn. It was a joke that Berlanga was given a title shot against Canelo after defeating these low level fighters: Padraig McCrory, Jason Quigley, and Macelo Coceres.
Last week, Berlanga, who hails from Brooklyn, New York, traveled to his home country of Puerto Rico and celebrated like a hero, which fans on social media thought was strange. He was celebrating his participation trophy by losing all 12 rounds against Canelo, and that rubbed people the wrong way.
Canelo chose Berlanga as his opponent, but he had never fought any super middleweights that deserved a title shot. His managers put him in the top for beating a small team.
If he had to fight someone good, like David Benavidez, David Morrell, or Caleb Plant, he probably would have been cut down long ago. It’s Canelo’s fault for choosing Berlanga because he should have waited until he fought one of these fights before choosing him.
By giving Berlanga the title, Canelo sent a message to all his other contenders that they can follow his path to earn their belts by fighting the opposition to create a false record.
Berlanga did not do well and fought a fight looking for survival, he made the same effort as Jermell Charlo when he faced Canelo Alvarez last year. Berlanga wrestled like a bigger version of Jermell, playing it safe, and not willing to let go of his hands despite his size advantage.
“He was using the jab better than before, which was good. I didn’t like him to back down, back down. He was a great man. He should have emphasized the difference in his size to Canelo, toughened him up,” said Andre Rozier in Fighthype, talking about his former striker, Edgar Berlanga who recently fought Canelo Alvarez on September 14.
“Sometimes you have to fight a dog to win it over so it can be on top of it. A lot of people ask me, ‘What do you think about playing?’ I won’t put him down or put him down for it, but you can’t celebrate coming up short. That’s what you don’t do,” Rozier said.
Berlanga was holding his own against the ropes as a partner playing with Canelo throughout the night. He had great size, but he couldn’t use it because he wasn’t there to try to win. He was in survival mode, and was just there on lead day in the minds of many fans. People who paid the top price of $89.95 on PPV to order Canelo vs. Berlanga were upset at how disappointing that fight was on top of the undercard.
You have to say to yourself, ‘I could have done better, and I must do better to be better.’ That was just talking. The Fighters did that, and he was the one who was happy with the words,” said Rozier when asked about his thoughts on being told that Berlanga said he wanted to move up to heavyweight and fight Anthony Johsua who is 210 lbs.
Berlanga looked as serious as a heart attack when he mentioned in various interviews that he would like to fight Anthony Joshua. That would be a complete joke, and it would be another example of Berlanga getting a fight he doesn’t measure up to. He’s never fought at heavyweight, and he shouldn’t be given the chance to fight a popular guy like Joshua without proving himself.
“Anthony Joshua wouldn’t happen. I love God. He’s going to bring out the true hero in him, and if he doesn’t respond as he should, then it’s going to be a long night for him. But if he gives it up and goes to him, it would be a very exciting fight where he could be the winner,” Rozier said when talking about who he would like to see Berlanga fight next.
If Berlanga is going to fight Jaime Munguia next, he will have to wait until next year because the Mexican is fighting Ronald Gavril in December. It would be good for Berlanga to show the fans that he is not a bad person and is willing to fight with other good players to prove himself.
Berlanga should focus on fighting Caleb Plant, Christian Mbilli, Diego Pacheco, or Osleys Iglesias. Some of those guys should be there and would willingly agree to fight him if he was brave enough to face them.
