Devin Haney gambled on his career, choosing to sue Ryan Garcia over the events of their April 20 confrontation earlier this year in Brooklyn, New York.
If Haney were to lose the case, it would damage his career, make him a pariah with elite fighters and treat him as one of the untouchable class. The case is a huge gamble, and it could sink Haney’s career, leaving him worse than he could have been.
Did Haney Make the Wrong Step?
Perhaps what Haney should have done instead of suing was to start creating interest in getting back together with Ryan Garcia by conducting regular interviews and posting on social media. When Ryan’s suspension ends in April 2025, there will be a lot of fan interest.
Haney would have a revenge angle, and he wouldn’t be seen as weak, as many fans now see him because of his guilt. Even if Haney lost the rematch, he would still make a lot of money.
There is a very real possibility that Haney’s case could result in him losing the chance for the biggest lead of his career in a rematch with Ryan, which would be a huge missed opportunity.
If Haney wins his case and is awarded tens of millions, it may not matter. He will have enough money collected from the case after giving his lawyer his share of the money to live comfortably without worrying about his job being lost. A lot has already happened, but the trial will be the final conclusion.
The case may hurt his chances of getting other powerful warriors to face him unless His Highness Turki Alalshikh takes him under his wing. Turki would have the money to lure the military to face Haney, but otherwise, he would be a victim. It is unclear how Turki will view Haney after all this. Will he see it as worth pumping money into his career, as he has done with Terence Crawford, Anthony Joshua, and an aging Tyson Fury, or will he ignore him?
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine and came out 3.5 kilograms overweight in what was scheduled to be a 140-round title fight against Haney for the WBC light welterweight belt.
“Devin’s father was making big decisions for his son. I think this is another great decision,” said trainer Greg Hackett at Fighthype, in response to Devin Haney suing Ryan Garcia, alleging fraud, battery, and unjust enrichment for their April 20 fight.
It doesn’t seem like a well thought out idea to choose to sue Ryan because it seems like a move made on emotion rather than looking at the bigger picture. If you look at the offense through a narrow lens, it makes sense, but now, if you consider how it hurt Haney’s chance for a playoff. If Haney is shunned by top fighters from now on, he’ll be shooting himself in the foot.
Is Ryan Garcia being milked?
“My mindset is a little different. I would like to hurt Ryan Garcia [in the ring]but in business and finance, they always use that term, ‘You gotta hit him where it hurts,’ which is banking,” Hackett continued.
“I could see Devin doing that because he was not only doing well, but we want to pay for it. We really want what he means [stuff] it wasn’t fun, and it shouldn’t happen again,” Hackett said.
If Haney says his career is over, the charge makes sense. However, if Haney sees this as a way to milking Ryan Garcia like a cow to get as much money as possible from him and get a duplicate, he can be disappointed.
“You will never know. That might be something Devin wants to do to keep the attention going. I wouldn’t do it, but I can’t be mad at him for what he did. In the entertainment world, it is a completely different world from what we are used to in everyday life. Sometimes, you have to deal with things like that,” Hackett said.
“If something happened, we are talking about the whole state [Haney’s career]and it took years to build. Boom! They wouldn’t let him make money if something stupid happened to the kid he was doing. So, you should sue him.
