Last year, Daniel Medvedev made the final in Beijing. Will it be a record when he breaks and lifts the trophy at the China Open?

The third seed improved his chances by defeating regular opponent Adrian Mannarino 7-6(6), 6-2 in the second round on Saturday to book a place in the quarter-finals. He is now three wins into his bid for his first tour-level title in 2024.

The number 5 player in the PIF ATP Rankings had to go deep against the Frenchman, who has always been a tough opponent for him. Needing a limited break to win the first set, Medvedev looked comfortable as the match wore on.

After exchanging breaks of serve early in the second set, he took the lead with a blistering forehand down the line to break Mannarino’s serve again. There was no looking back as the Frenchman made quick work from there, winning four games in a row to seal the match. He tied the Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 4-4.

With the win, Medvedev advanced to the quarterfinals of the 75th level and the eighth of the season. The 20-time tour-ranked will next face rising Italian Flavio Cobolli, who knocked out qualifier Pavel Kotov 6-4, 6-2.

Medvedev is fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin. The 28-year-old is aiming to make it to the Nitto ATP Finals for the sixth year in a row.
