Augusta National to assess the damage caused by Helene

Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley said the club is assessing the damage to the school after the area was hit hard by Hurricane Helene on Friday morning.

In a statement, Ridley said the club is focused on helping its employees, neighbors and businesses in Augusta who were affected by the damage. At least 15 people have died in Georgia, and the storm has left more than a million people without power in the state, according to Gov. Brian Kemp.

“Our community in Augusta suffered a tragic and historic loss from Hurricane Helene,” Ridley said. “We are currently evaluating the results at Augusta National Golf Club.

“Right now, our focus and efforts are on our employees, neighbors and business owners in Augusta. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and everyone throughout Georgia and the Southeast who have been affected.”

Augusta experienced tropical-storm-force winds Friday morning. According to the National Weather Service, an 82 mph wind gust was observed at the Augusta Regional Airport. First responders reported that trees had fallen on many homes, vehicles and roads in the area. There was extensive damage to areas near the Augusta National Golf Club.

About 225,000 people were without power in Augusta, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

Augusta National Golf Club is scheduled to host the 89th edition of the Masters, the first major tournament of the season, on April 10-13, 2025.
